National Payroll Week 2026

National Payroll Week 2026 (7–11 Sept) is here, a look at why compliant payroll matters, what's changing in the industry, and how Riddingtons keeps clients protected.

National Payroll Week 2026: Why Getting Pay Right Matters More Than Ever

Every September, the payroll profession gets a week in the spotlight it rarely asks for but absolutely deserves. National Payroll Week, run by the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP), runs from 7–11 September 2026, and it's a timely reminder of just how much rests on the shoulders of pay professionals across the UK.

At Riddingtons, we live and breathe this work every day, so this week feels like a good moment to reflect on why payroll matters, what's changing in the industry, and how our clients benefit from having compliance built into everything we do.

The Scale of What Payroll Actually Does

It's easy to think of payroll as a back-office function, something that quietly happens in the background so long as everyone gets paid on time. But the numbers tell a different story. According to the CIPP, the pay industry contributes an estimated £474 billion to the UK economy every year through the collection of income tax and National Insurance alone. That's not a rounding error, that's one of the most vital functions in British business.

Behind every one of those payslips is a payroll professional making sure the calculation is right, the deductions are correct, and the payment lands exactly when it should. Get it right and nobody notices. Get it wrong and it's the first thing anyone notices.

A Profession Under Pressure to Evolve

This year's National Payroll Week theme, running across ten free CIPP webinars throughout the week, is all about how payroll is changing. Topics on the agenda include the shift from managing payroll to designing it, the move towards mandatory payrolling of benefits in kind, the skills employers will need from payroll teams in the next few years, and the growing role of AI and automation in day-to-day processing.

None of this is abstract for us. It's exactly the landscape our clients are operating in right now:

  • Mandatory payrolling of benefits in kind is on the horizon, and employers, HR teams, and finance functions all need to understand what it means for their processes well before it lands.
  • Compliance expectations keep rising, whether that's IR35 status determinations, umbrella company due diligence, or CIS reporting for construction sector clients.
  • The talent market for payroll professionals is tightening, which is exactly why outsourcing to a specialist provider is increasingly the smarter option for growing businesses.

Why Compliance Isn't a Buzzword, It's the Whole Job

We work with contractors, recruitment agencies, and businesses who can't afford to get this wrong. A missed deduction, a misclassified worker, or a late RTI submission doesn't just cause admin headaches, it creates real financial and legal exposure.

That's why compliance sits at the centre of how we operate, not as an afterthought bolted on at the end. Whether it's supporting FCSA-accredited umbrella arrangements, managing CIS payments for construction workers, or giving agencies the assurance they need through frameworks like Workforce Assured, the goal is always the same: make sure the people doing the work get paid correctly, and make sure the businesses relying on us never have to worry about what's happening behind the scenes.

Celebrating the People Who Make It Happen

National Payroll Week is ultimately about people, not processes. It's a chance to recognise the professionals who quietly make sure millions of workers are paid accurately and on time, every single week of the year, not just this one.

So to every payroll professional reading this: thank you. The work you do rarely gets applauded, but it keeps the UK economy moving.

If you're a business owner, agency, or contractor wondering whether your current payroll setup is giving you the compliance protection it should, National Payroll Week is as good a time as any to ask the question. Get in touch with the Riddingtons team to find out how we can help.
